When He Finally Set Sail

Rating: 5.0

From the shores of intense suffering
After being tossed about days and nights
Like a boat tethered to the shores of grief
As wave after wave of pain battered it
He must have had no regrets
Having invested his life well
In love and in compassion...
And too many of his loved ones cried
The night he left; a moon less one at that
And now he is all over the basic elements
In settled earth, flowing waters and raging winds
Dispersed, and yet I quite often find him
Many a time when silence and solitude calls
With deep remembrance of times gone by
And I see him sit on the sick bed of my mind
Grey eyes half open, slightly unshaven
Smiling faintly, one hand outstretched
Cold but throbbing with love, with so much love....

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is written as a tribute to my father-in-law who surrendered to lung cancer two years ago. In his last days a sense of deep acceptance had come and I still vividly recall all events as they unfurled in the final stages. He went with grace and taught us several things that no university can offer on life and on the enigma called death.

This is one of the good poems read lately. I liked the way you paralleled the troublesome stage of his life to a boat struck again and again by harsh waves.

A moving tribute to your father in law, rendered with affection and pathos! Some people who reach the terminal stage accept the inevitable with grace and an astonishingly high level of inner elan! ! Thanks for reading my poem and commenting! !
