They Put Gum On His Grave - Poem by A.j. Binash

There is chewing gum
Inside the chalk outline
It was brought there
From a police officer’s shoe

Chewing gum
Where someone died
Where someone took
Their final breath

From a weeping wound
Came a puddle of blood
That outlined the body

When the paramedics
A death rattle erupted from his throat
A final belch to say goodbye

Above in the upper floor apartments
Children watched the death of their innocence
As the neighbor was carried away
Stiff as a wax figure

A concrete photograph
There is chewing gum
On a person’s last smile
