Bathing Scene - Poem by Prabhakar Subramaniam

The shoppers walk
Up and down
The pavement
Eyes darting
Around every stall
Hungry for everything
Both wanted and unwanted
Put off only by the prices;
In the sky-deep puddle
Caused by the summer shower
The nameless bird
Alights, dips its head
Shakes it, dips it, shakes it
Again and again
A child breaking free
From her mother
Stops to watch
The bathing scene
Clapping, laughing and clapping
Cheering every toss of the head
Flap of wing
Flicker of eyes
Lost to the world
Lost in the world
