Lucy Lou was a girl of ten,
sporting lots of tight brown curls.
Her big teeth and "wandering …
eye" distracted boys and girls.
She took special care of her teeth;
a sparkling smile did show it.
And as for an eye that wandered,
her doctor said: "She'll outgrow it."
She had some control over her eye,
the one which sometimes did "wander".
At times she could stop OR start it.
"Will it stop completely? " she'd ponder.
A new family moved in next door,
including a boy the same age.
Would they be friends? She did hope so.
It was too early for her to gauge.
The next day at the school bus stop,
He smiled at her and said "Hello".
She smiled back and said "Hi" to him.
She sat up front, under seat did stow …
…her backpack, making room for him.
But he passed by and sat way back.
A neighbor girl sat next to Lou,
and told her: "New boy's name is Jack."
They rode the same school bus for years,
rarely sharing a seat together.
They went to the same church as well,
in summer heat and wintery weather.
At age nineteen they said their "vows",
thus becoming "man and wife".
For nearly sixty season cycles,
they rode the ups and downs of married life …
together.
