Wine Poem by DEEPAK KUMAR PATTANAYAK

Wine

Freshly brewed or decades old
I love to have them all at my lips,
In my mouth and in my stomach
Oh! How I feel them while gulping down
I can't say I can't say my friends
The ecstasy of over the moon
And being in the heaven gently breezes in
And unfolded quietly is my soul before me
Taste varies and so is intoxication
When I take Plath's
I feel homeless and lonely
When I take Dickinson's
I feel homesick and death-friendly
And in a secluded place I build my castle,
Close-by a garden where flowers bloom
And birds tweet and my whole world abides
From where spring forth poems, story and life
When I take Frost's
I am a countryman raising fields and farms
And loving woods and meadows and brooks and stars
And when I take Keats'
I think of you and you and you
Love, beauty and romance outpour
And when I take Angelou's
I ask for my dignity and freedom
And when I take Shelley's and Poe's and Parker's and………….
Many things happen and many things felt
And so is the intoxication mixed and great
And after taking yours
I go to sleep my friends I go to sleep
But short is life and big is chalice
And deep is the sea of wine
And large is your heart and your enterprise
Where you burn midnight oil
And create, mix and remix
And bring colors, tastes, imagination to life
And life to inanimate things
Once in the dead of night
I saw death standing at my door
I kindly invited him in to share my drinks
And filled his cup to the very brim with this wine
And said cheers, cheers and cheers
And he said,
"It has a twang of a paradise in it smacking his lips"
And left in darkness seeking goodness and peace
And when I got up in the morning
I felt freshness of life in everything
But how long my friends how long
My chalice of life is not as big as yours
That it can hold your bitter-sweet wine infinitely
And may spill over soon or latter
But happily with the wealth of peace and beauty
As I fill my life and after I will to the very brim
With the pleasure of your wine eternally

The chalice of life! You have filled yours with poetic excellence and expression. A delightful read, varied and well textured as a fine bottle of wine, as imaginative and inspirational as a good book of poetry.
