Why Always Haiti? Poem by Hebert Logerie

Why Always Haiti?

Why always Haiti?
Why our country again?
Why always us?
But no, we are not fools
Too much blood flows unnecessarily everywhere
In the corners; too many crying, too many
Decapitated necks and imported bullets
And too many numb and heartless young hooligans
Even the werewolves are hidden under the mats
We wonder and we fathom. Why they fight
For power, for money
Like animals, like beasts
Which eat rats, mice and peacocks?
It's worse than the jungle. What a fiasco! What a defeat!
Why so many tears and so many deaths
So much wrong and zero regret and remorse?
A people, who forgets, has no life
This people has no future, no goals and no energy
It's death. It's disappointment. It's sadness
It's misery. This is a nation which is in constant pain
Why so many heinous crimes?
Where are the Saints, the Angels and the Almighty God?
Where are they? We ask ourselves a thousand questions
Because we must take several actions
We got to stop talking, we got to really act
To save a nation which knows so much fear and martyrs
We wonder why, why over a million times
Until we lose our health, sanity, holiness and faith
We wonder again and again why Haiti
A people so proud, so strong, so laborious and courageous
Has the misfortune of having corrupt goons as leaders
That we have to expose naked in the scuzzily stinking streets
My God, the Poets would love to use warmer and better words
To praise Haiti but decency prevents them
Nevertheless silence is forbidden, we must burn the wicks
We must sprinkle and incense the country to drive out the demons
Despite everything, Haiti is a leafy country of hope
That we must not let drown in the fiendish funnel
Why Haiti? It is a country full of potential, of mountains
Plains, rivers, valleys, creeks, and charming smiles. Why?
Why so many Haitians remain nailed to the cross?
Why always Haiti?
Why our country again?
