Who Am I? Poem by DEEPAK KUMAR PATTANAYAK

Who Am I?

Rating: 4.5

Who am I?
- - - - - - - -
I gaze upon mountains and waves
I gaze upon rivers and ocean
Pass by and wonder who am I?
I gaze upon the sky and the sun
I gaze upon stars and the moon
Stand still and wonder who am I?
I gaze upon bees and butterflies
I gaze upon birds and trees
Pause and ask myself who am I?
As I am a stranger to myself
And they asked me be yourself
And I am embarrassed by my ignorance
Of myself, the perpetual problem of self
I am a mere skin-bag
Of flesh, blood, bones and muscles
And they said it a mistaken notion
To achieve any task better know yourself
Like a stranger, throw yourself
Across a room and steadily gaze at it
And you will eventually gain largeness
But I am a feeble and unlearned man
Had I been taught
And trained to understand self
I could be living with serene minds
And smiling faces
Instead of gnawing anxiety
And frowning foreheads
I suppose it's bad advice
Or I don't know who am I yet?

This is a vital question what we all ask ourselves. The day the quest is answered, the life moves a step forward towards the realization of divinity. Thanks for sharing

Who am I..... a question which has baffled men through eons! All thinking men ask this to themselves! But the answer is often vague.. and we keep wondering over the mystery called man! Those who plumb into the inner depths of one's being may come up with some answers and they reap sucess in life! Some self awareness though not of the fullest kind is essential for everyone! Great write!

I am reminded of the Upnishadas which have attempted to provide an answer to this perennial query 'who am I? ' Sufi saint Bulle Shah has the same question when he asks - kee jaana main kaun? Thanks for the wonderful yet simple treatment of a complex subject having a universal appeal.
