Scroll 2 Poem by Ahmad Shiddiqi

Scroll 2

Rating: 5.0

solitary servant raised her eyes to see
who was walking along Volga river
in the shade of frozen fortress
muted priest read a book of exorcism

with a topaz fountain murmuring in Alta Badia
pots of gardenias perfumed at dawn
the space among red terraces was splendid
for so many forgotten heroes of life

if you had told the lie
not me or that mere listeners
or any one in the carnival
would have adored you
as much as we did

when the clocks struck nine
and crows scream hauntingly
a single flash of lightning
made the nuance frighten

the gala nights in the Amazon woods
were full of compassionate guests
the sharp eyes from their hidden towers
watched that music, dance, and party

(dedicated to a poet friend at poemhunter, Luwi Habte)
