Ramadan Evenings Poem by Latha Krishnan

Ramadan Evenings

Rating: 5.0

There’s a hush all around
There’s hardly any sound
It’s a Ramadan evening!
As the orange ball of the sun dips beneath the ocean
Busy birds get ready to quietly roost
Children stop play and go home to Iftar spreads
Thinning traffic comes to almost standstill
The faithful are together
At homes, eateries, mosques
Waiting for the cannon boom
And the call to prayer
To partake of the first sip of water and the first morsel of food
After a long and sometimes hard day of fasting
The meaning of Ramadan
And its significance is in every one’s mind
Even those who are not fasting,
Thus they realise the deprivation and pain of the less fortunate.
As one more Ramadan day fades and passes by
The night will bring with it family gatherings and prayers
Sleep and then the waking up to eat before sun up
To begin
Yet another day of fasting
And experiencing the depth of joy and blessedness
Of this holiest of months
Its days and nights of fasting and prayer
And its peaceful memorable Ramadan evenings!
