Radio Is Rad Poem by Spock the Vegan

Radio Is Rad

Rating: 5.0

When I was a lad everybody wanted to own
One of those big tall radios called a Silvertone.
On Tuesday nights there were radio shows.
One of them spoke "The Shadow Knows."

When I was a little bigger my little sisters
Wanted much smaller radios with transistors.
I built a smaller radio that I thought was tops.
It had a germanium diode in a zipper box.

Later on it became the rave
For people like me to have a short-wave.
With one of those you could listen to the hams
With a long wire antenna out the window jambs.

My friends did something that they thought was grand.
They bought radios that covered the citizens band.
Now you could talk to them while they did walk
With a walkie-talkie down the block.

In the ‘60s countries were trying to win the space race.
Now we have satellites and probes in outer space.
How do we communicate with those? Don't you know?
By using the waves of ultra-high frequency radio.

This poem is very well done and brought back great memories. I don't specifically remember the Silvertone brand (well maybe just faintly) but I certainly remember listening to The Shadow. When he wasn't invisible he was LaMont Cranston, if I remember correctly. I don't remember his girlfriend's name.

I guess there's no hiding our age when we admit to owning a Silvertone - I did too. How I loved my radio and my music. I also remember listening to The Shadow. I always have loved a good mystery. Later, I bought a Silvertone TV. I believe Sears Roebuck was the only retailer for Silvertone back then. And I still love listening to music, but now I do it on my computer. I get to choose exactly what I want to hear. Thanks for the memories. Great poem!

I think you are right - Silvertone was a Sears product. There may have been other brands that looked similar. The picture shown is different than the one Dad owned. I still find 'oldies but goodies' on AM radio.
