Phony Poem by Nancy Chanthakoun

Phony

The thing I want you to know is I’m not really who I am
This is my truth
Say I’m lying, but also say, you don’t know me
The person you see standing before you
Might not be the one you thought
Maybe you’ve been fed lies
But you don’t know me, you think you do
You think you’ve got me figured out
But I’m not who you think I am
I give you bits and pieces of my life
But that’s never enough
You go on assuming, saying I’m this, or that
Filling in the gaps with your assuming lies
And now I stand before you
Letting you continue with you harsh judgment
But I will tell you who I am
I will tell you my life story
I will tell you what happened that night two years ago
I will tell you about September 29,1992
I will tell you how I felt when you turned you back and walked away
You think I give you lies about the truth
I see your face, you don’t believe what I say
But I don’t care, I stopped caring
I stopped caring the moment I locked myself
in my room and cried all night
Since I don’t care, why should you say you do
