Trapped Poem by Nancy Chanthakoun

Trapped

Today is no longer like before
As we watch our freedom fall apart
No longer can we stroll along the street
Without fear of a bomb going off
The skies of blue have filled with red
The color of blood, the numbers of death
How did this happen, where did we go wrong?

All around us are the faces of the world
Their eyes filled with misery
The bitter pain that kills
Hoping that everything will get better
But it never will

What caused all this to happen?
Was it how we led the nation?
Or maybe how we treated our people?
But we’ll never know
Only assume

And now our country is fading away
Seeing people get shot, murdered, or abused
It’s everyday life for everyone
The leaders of the past accomplished a lot
Trying to make a better place for those who cannot

If they saw us now they would only scowl
At nothing we’ve improved in our
Oh-so beautiful country.
