My Mother Poem by Anil Kumar Panda

My Mother

From morn to dusk
And to the end of the endless night
I saw her hopping from here to there
With a worried face making things from wrong to right

From a newborn to the young
And to the old who dared her to disobey
Her orders were written on her face
We had to be obedient kids or lose meals of the day

From front gate to the backyard
Her eyes roam like an evil curse
No one wanted getting caught doing wrong
Punishment was imminent; her words were simple and terse

From one room to another and then to other
As she dragged herself with her heavy feet
Double vigour we put into our work
For we knew well she threw her slap quite hard and swift

Sometimes things would go wrong
Our lives would pass through misfortune’s terms
We yearned for hope and pity
She rushed to gather us under her caring arms

Her serene eyes stare at all of us
As we assembled before her portrait to pray
She must be smiling on the other side of life
For what we were then and what we are today
