Man's Best Friend Poem by Edwina Reizer

Man's Best Friend

You gentle four-legged little beast
Content with a bone on which you feast
Have brought to me such wondrous joy
Just like a child, a girl or boy.
Playful and happy with eyes so bright
Wagging your tail both day and night,
No more loyal could there ever be
Another creature just for me.

Into my life as a pup you came
Romping, chewing, ready for a game.
You play non-stop for hour upon hour.
Only from a high pitched tone would you cower.
A leap onto my lap for me to pet,
A look of contentment I can’t forget
My constant companion to which I grew
Forever connected, never through.

Twelve long years you were by my side.
You stayed by me when I laughed or cried.
You accepted my shouts when I yelled at you,
Awaiting my temperance to come into view.
And as you aged and slowed your pace
Your thoughts were still centered just one place
On me. My constant faithful friend.
We were together right up to the end.

And now that you’ve gone quietly to sleep
I have only my memories of you to keep.
I miss the friendship, the lick of your tongue.
I miss the feeling of being so young,
Young at heart from being with you,
Something only a wonderful dog can do.
For you were man’s best friend you see.
I’ll remember you always looking at me.
