I'M Fine Poem by Edwina Reizer

I'M Fine

My old friend
He never said a word.
'I'm fine he said.
That's all I ever heard.
We played some cards,
Drank some beer
and when I asked him
about his life
All I'd ever hear was
I'm fine. I'm fine.
I should have seen the sign.

Once in a while
a tear was in his eye.
Shouldn't I have known
a man doesn't cry?
A man just lives
the best way he can.
He never complained
right up to the end.
He held my hand tight.
He thanked me for the card games.
He died that night.

My old friend
you never said a word.
I thought you were okay
'cause all I ever heard was
'I'm fine'.
