Eli Eli Lama Sabacthani Poem by Gert Strydom

Eli Eli Lama Sabacthani

I

If I could go back in time to a hill
where a rough cross stands
and look at the scene
where the creator of the world perishes,
I would have understood
how it’s to hang innocent for everybody’s sins
and for a god to be captured
in human flesh.

II

If I could go back in time to a hill
where a rough cross stands
I would have known
how His exclamation of fear
“Eli Eli lama sabacthani”
really hits through flesh
and how it feels to be forsaken by God and man
and what it means
not to account those that persecuted him.
