Election Time Poem by Anil Kumar Panda

Election Time

They come in hordes
Like dead leaves swept
Away by high wind;
Honking through streets
They won't give a chance
To the dust to settle down;
With sirens blaring from
Cavalcade of vehicles
Even ghosts wake up in
Their graves and watch
Out the dance party;
People throng the side walks
Like ants carrying loads
Anticipating rain;
Foundation stones are laid,
Promises are made,
Cash is distributed,
Shutters of liquor shops
Are kept open throughout
The night; people eat
And vomit on streets and
Returned homes with
Flowers tucked in ears;
Yeah, it's election time;
Faces smiling in posters
From walls with subject
Line, ‘Poverty will be
Gone in two months time.'
For some reasons the clouds
Give a resounding laugh.
