A Letter To King (2015) Poem by Weldon Davis

A Letter To King (2015)

Rating: 5.0

Sorry Martin
The dream became a nightmare
And it wouldn't be fair
To blame one side
All have their issues
To work out

I can't speak for the bigots cause
I don't understand them
And as a white man I can't speak for blacks
That would be presumptive
And I've learned over time
That that is a mistake
Waiting to happen...

All I can tell you
Reverend King
Is what I observe
Consider me a fly
On the metaphorical wall
(If you will)

The bigots have succeeded in
Passing down pride
(Of all things to be proud of! !)
Pride in a concept
As ludicrous as
'White Supremacy'
Under the guise of 'Heritage'
White kids tattoo swastikas
On their chest and claim
88- or Heil Hitler

Redneck judges send
Blacks and poor whites
Away for life
While silver spoon killers
Get off with community service
White cops kill at will
And are released on
The streets
Having been justified in their actions
By a jury of their 'Peers'

Laws targeted at
(Once again)
Blacks and poor whites
Three strikes and you're out
Like life is a baseball game

No jobs for felons
No change for a convict
Just a constant
Rinse.Lather.Repeat.

Prisons overcrowded- understaffed
Society won't be safe
Until we take them off
The streets
They claim
The youth see no truths
They just bang
Their heads
Against stone walls of oppression

No role models
Like you and X left
Just retards
Stuck on regression

It's like your worst fears came to life
We were at the dawn of a new age
Once again it's night

All we do is riot
And show
We are no better than savages
Injustice begets injustice
That's the practices
Of our modern 'Revolutionists'

We voted a man into the oval office
Simply cause he was black
For the novelty of it..
Afraid to criticize him
Cause if you do
You're a racist
Or worse an uncle Tom

Never mind for the past 8 years
I've yet to have a job
Too busy in court, county,
Probation office, or prison
(There is a program for you! !)

Whatever happened to the most qualified?
Whatever happened to the hardest working guy
Getting rewarded for his efforts?

Equality happened

Well a perversion of the concept
You, Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks,
And so many others fought for

Equality became com placement
The government said
We'll just feed em
And house em in the basement
For damn near free

Give em a dog and pony show
Give em a basketball and let em shoot hoops
Give em a rifle and let em shoot at Arabs
In a foreign desert
Give em cocaine from Bolivia
And baking soda from Arm and Hammer
Crack laws locked away for centuries
Let em shoot each other in the foot

At clubs
As they shoot off at
The mouth
And clown their brethren
For being poor
(Like anybody wants to be poor)

We're poor because
We forgot the dream
We forgot the dream
Cause they kill the dreamers
They kill the dreamers
Cause they kill the status quo
And you know how they hate
When you fudge with the program right?

So as I sit tonight in this cell
I want to apologize Dr. King to you

As a man among many
As a thinker among so very few
For not doing more of my part
For taking the easy way out
So many times in life
For not speaking my mind more often
Even when it's not popular
But I promise in the year 2015
To do these prior mentioned things
In order to
Keep the dream
Vivid
In order to keep the dream
Alive
