Words Poem by Casey O'Sheridan

Words

Rating: 5.0

Words so easily fill up a page
They make a blank surface look full
As empty as they may be

In them truth and lies mingle
Emptiness-nothing or full of life
Disrupting or creating harmony

They can be dead and meaningless
Or evoke a surprising surge of emotion
Both superficial or deep within our souls

They can make you laugh or cry
They can kick up sparks and make you want to fight
Or they can calm the most turmoil-filled heart

They can be strung into a song of enthusiasm
Combined into harsh, hurtful phrases
Or create the melody of a poem

They can clash into an exciting saga
An action-filled story full of twists and turns
True or false they capture our attention and imagination

They can entwine into a seductive tale
Grasping that feeling in the pit of our stomach
Refusing to let go until we have finished every sentence

They can be mushed together tastelessly
In a boring way that puts us to sleep
Uninteresting with no spice-simply bland

They can lead us astray or set us right
What is it about words that make us stop
That make us heed and listen-whether or not we obey

They can make us take faith and stand again
Or shake us to our very core
They can place such fear into our hearts

But what are they? Simple words
Meaningless letters strung together
How can they have such power?

One word can have multiple meanings
Every word for that matter depending on the tone
You can tell the depths of a person’s soul through every word

Where would we be without words?
Such a depressing thought….A world without words
No names for people or things

No communication or interest
Without words or descriptions
Thing don’t seem as tantalizing-no personality

Words are so obviously powerful
God Himself used them to create the earth
Words spoken into life, into substance

Words are life. Are death
Are tangible-yet escape touch
They are alive
