Welcome To Nowhere Poem by Virginia Drungil

Welcome To Nowhere

Rating: 4.5

Walmart in the middle of nowhere
lost by the side of the
once great American highway
between the junkyards and greasy joints
where you'll be served biscuits and gravy
at any hour of your wasteful life
it would break your hardened heart
if you realized the futility
of it all

Welcome to Nowhere! Time stops here
it's final resting place
the silent tomb of all the hopes
and dreams you've ever had
in your possession
perhaps, in the stupor of generosity
you offered it for nothing
over the cheep beer and fried chicken
to the devil disguised as
a perfect stranger

Flat tire, flat landscape
disturbingly flat line of your life
monotony follows you everywhere
like a stray dog
there's no place for tenderness
in your heart
it's wasted, it's drunk
it's awash in self-pity
dry tears- lead in your eyes

An impulse to feel alive
revel in wonderment no longer yours
how different can it possibly be
the other side of the tracks
mile long cargo trains
corroded artery of railway
flat-lines through the heart
of this landscape of desolation
grotesque yet touching
farewell

Gravity absolves the would-be free fall
free-for-all...There's nothing and nobody
will ever be waiting for you
but half-empty junkyard lots
and defaced boards staring blindly
grass grows slowly and
persistently towards the pale sky
like sand you slip through
the stiffness of fingers
untouched and
unnoticed
