We Are Mostly Water (Tanka)

Rating: 5.0

The ocean expands
In us as liquid solid.
Organized water
Percolates through all life forms.
We are mainly H2O.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The human brain and heart are composed of 73% water and lungs are about 83% water. The human embryo consists of 97% water, vs the average adult body's 65%.

This verse follows the classical Japanese poetry genre of tanka. A short poem, tanka consists of five units, usually in separate lines. In romanized version the 31 syllables in the five lines form a pattern of:
5-7-5-7-7.

This poem is part of the "Poetry and Mathematics" project implemented at Dalhousie University, Halifax.
