The Violent Gene Poem by Venkateswaran Krishnan Sreenivasan

The Violent Gene

Oft have you heard the geneticist tell
The human male doth bear in his cell
Chromosomes with genes two score and six
Two for crime nay, two for sex.

The gene that burns the youthful bride
And kills her unborn pride,
That sets ablaze the crowded train
And blasts the building, bridge and plane

The gene that rapes the virgin girl
And leaves a scar on her soul,
And gleefully murders in cold blood
Men, women and babes in bed.

Oh! That I were born a cow!
To be loved and to love
One’s own kind and breed
To cast out the violent creed.

Scientists of the world! awake
To the ravage this gene has wrought
On humans and beasts alike
This devil within must be fought.
