The Thorny Crown (Italian Sonnet) Poem by Gert Strydom

The Thorny Crown (Italian Sonnet)

"Unto Adam He said…cursed is the ground
for thy sake…Thorns… shall it bring forth."
Genesis 2: 17-18
"The soldiers platted a crown of thorns,
and put it on His head." Matthew 27: 29

(after Ada Cambridge)

On the earth cursed for Adam's own sake,
You saw the first fatal thorny seed sprout,
there was no easy way to wipe sin out,
and the first clothes You did for them make,

came to man after he did You forsake,
of Your sacrifice You talked about,
with great love did not to the rebels shout,
taught man to in a sincere life partake.

A thorny crown was forced on Your head,
when You came to earth in infinite love,
cruelty and no mercy was to you shown,
innocently You were killed in man's stead,
brought love instead of destroying with wrath.
Not another person like You is known.
