The Sea Would Have Been Peaceful Poem by Suki Nakamura

The Sea Would Have Been Peaceful

the sea would have been peaceful this morning
as you sit on the white sand
facing the coming of the sun
combing your long hair
with the comb that mother gave you
before she died

the sea is one white linen spread on the
surface of your bed of solitude

and then you remember him
bringing joy like a basket of fruits and flowers
imploring
and you open the door and you talk
and you accepted his plea
for love

and you always remember what devotion
was
he was taken by the sea itself one day
everything
his body his soul

it is at the point of bliss when sorrow comes
it is when you think that life is beautiful
that fate comes
and takes back what it has given you freely

you comb your hair like you are combing your thoughts
there must be a reason
why the lice are not dead yet

you keep on waiting for someone who does not come anymore
perhaps it is time for you to ask fate to let you go

and find him again somewhere beyond this peaceful sea
