The Poet's Oath Poem by Oni Omotayo

The Poet's Oath

Give me the mystic vesture
Bequeath to me the circlet of poethood
Come there is a thought in my heart
Come there is a mystery I love to share
I have bought from the wisdom spoken of old,
The epos narrated with the tongues of the aged
Of the unchanging power of words,
I gave my ears to the riddles of my fathers
And their obscurities were unfolded by the sage.
I have this day drawn out a pen
Come let me write on the tables of your heart
I have sworn allegiance to the Word
I will defend my conviction
I will conquer destiny and bridge eternal verities
An emissary of precision is my chosen course
Am called on the row in succession of faith
I will lay my scroll to the gueridon of the council
To save the tears of the weak
And let loose the cry of the potent,
To rend the raiment of kings
And cloth the nakedness of the poor
With glimpse of great secrets buried long in history
With lights of Knowledge and echoes of love
I will indite drops of still words for the healing of the soul,
I shall this day pour upon the pages of this book
The revelations of the divine.
