The Music Of War Poem by Tim Vallie

The Music Of War

Enemies encircle us, surrounding
The war drums rhythmic, pounding
'Death and chaos, we have come! '
The chant to beating drum

We board our doors and man the walls
Knowing soon our stones shall fall
'We cannot hold, we cannot hide! '
Now doomed to death by our lord's pride

'We must yield or all shall perish! '
The priest cries within his parish

'We must surrender! We must yield! '
Our lord then only grabs his shield

War horns blowing o'er our screams
The land we love with raiders teems
The drums dark rhythm still is pounding
The Song of War endlessly resounding

'Surrender, or die, ' the Warlord calls
'Before we're finished each stone shall fall
Each man shall bleed, each woman scream
The horrors of your darkest dream.'

'Death and chaos, we have come! '
Raiders chant to beating drum

Surrender or not, we all shall die
This is seen in each invader's eye

Our lord draws sword, raises his shield
'We shall die if we should yield.'
He calls unto his guard
'Die like men, like warriors hard!
We fight to defend our hearth and hall
We fight for honors call
They raid for riches, kill for gold
If we're to live our walls must hold! '

We died to war horn, beating drum
For Death that day did come
We matched the raiders blood for blood
We stained the land with reddened flood

To the music of war did warriors dance
Our instruments sword and shield, horse and lance
That day we danced to beating drum
That day that Death did come

The war drums rhythmic beat, the blowing horns of war
Our orchestra stained that land with death forevermore

When war drums beat, and war horns blow
Rivers of blood from them shall flow
To them we dance, to them we fall
When the Music of War to us does call.

You do have this innate sense of structure which drives the narrative so well. The question I ask myself what drives all these dark fantasies you write. Intiguing but it does not detract from the quality of your writing and you do it in rhyme as well. Am so impressed with that because your rhyme never feels forced. Thanks.
