The Critic Poem by George Hunter

The Critic

Unless you're good, like Ferlenghetti,
Free verse makes your writing read
Like a pile of spaghetti.
It takes much skill to pull it off, you know
Because without the rhythm
It just won't flow.
Just writing down words
Doesn't good poetry make,
It's a hard job,
Not a piece of cake.

Learn the difference between
You're and your and it's and its,
Poor punctuation
Gives me the fits.
Use the dictionary,
Learn how to spell.
Education will always
Serve you well.

e. e. cummings could do it
With approbation
But otherwise all lower case
Is just affectation.

I don't mean to discourage a budding poet
But if you follow some rules
Your poetry will show it.
But I'm just a rhymer
So what the hey,
If you'll just ignore me
Maybe I'll go away.

I don't want to offend
Anyone out there
So keep on writing
And y'all take care!
