The Aged Poem by Andrew Lunel

The Aged

Rating: 5.0

Now are my mind and body weary
Time and space have left their mark
The paths I took brought me here
To continue with aids I scoffed at
People and place lost in the vastness of time and space

I remember fields we boys ran in
I smell the freshness in the air
I feel the cool springs on my back
And the freshly ploughed earth at my feet
History made itself in me

In the frenzy of my youth
Lust and love I found
Pleasures of the heart sought
Building myself for the rest of the journey
Starting off alone and drowning in inexperience

Running with the flow of the multitudes
Colliding random with mistrust
Learning from the errors made
Nurturing oneself alone
I made it through

I remember the joy at the first born
Company makes the run worth it
The apple in our eyes held us
When the worlds we created pulled us apart
And we now had pride in our progress

We worked hard in the garden
And our seed grew
Looking at the orchard that was once a plant
With wars and truces, treaties and alliances
The battlefront was ours

When work we could not
The world to roam and beauty to see
Set off now the last reserves of extinguished youth
Joys of the world in the palms of roughened hands
Some times we looked back but still moved forward

The people we called friends no more
Lost with time lost in our minds
The orchard has moved on to newer lands
Leaving us the memories of great produce
We sit hand in hand

Her gentle touch is gone now
As I grip the winds that feel no restraint
Pain has moved in
The feet I have weak and weathered
I was alone again

Company means nothing now
My comrades survive or not
We all do in the same fashion
Waiting for the light in the dark
Lying down alone

The beginnings of this 'fabric' we call life, excites as we define or 'digest' our own interpretation of what this is we live. Nice and probing piece you have written. Reflective and meaningful are your observations.
