Status Quo Poem by dy.sin the writer

Status Quo

A doctor is expected to be just that
So is a lawyer and a dentist
No one ever asks the lawyer to clean his teeth
or the dentist to appeal a prison sentence

A writer isn't expected to paint houses
and a painter isn't expected to write books
No one ever expects a diner to hire
a race car driver instead of a cook

Yet when the bell rings
all forget that I was chosen to teach a course
and I'm expected, at times, to be a parent,
a counselor and judicial source

"You must do more, " they say,
"than teach children how to count and read."
"You must do more, " they say,
"for children to succeed."

I must now be the parent
as the parent mirrors the child.
I must now be the counselor
that never seeks to cure the wild.

I must now be that judicial source
to keep the children on the right path.
Now, what time does that leave me
to teach Reading and Math?
