To Single Women Over 30 Poem by dy.sin the writer

To Single Women Over 30

he's lukewarm
has one foot in the pool
his leading line is BE PATIENT
leaving you feeling like the fool
you give your all
and he's acting all cool
matching your struggle with applause
you feel so small
knowing he's not the cause
it's you

he isn't the fault of your heartache
he's the aftermath

not the friction of tectonic plates

he's the 6.0 earthquake
not the punch-line
but the laugh

he's the raging effect
the sounding of the alarm
that signals you to run
and yet
at least for another day
you stay in his arms

most days you're unable to look
in the mirror
because at twenty-one
it was you who wore the billboard
that read that age would never
play a role in the man you would elect
and yet you voted a fool to rule
over your heart
which makes you the bigger fool
he suspects

to single women over thirty
i get it
the pool is drying up
and you're in it

so what do you do?
get out
pull someone
anyone else in
so you won't be without
company
so much doubt

read the papers and it will shout
that there is a movement going on
beneath the surface
where single women over thirty
are compromising their standards
to have company at social gatherings
and candlelight dinners

it will shout that single women over thirty hear
mostly ticking clocks
and are looking for anyway out
of that single's box
so now they are overlooking their need
to supply their desire to not be alone
when it's dark
when it's silent
when it's home

so what it's been six months
and he hasn't introduced you to his family
so what he goes to Hooters everyday for lunch
even though you make him lunch
so what he is unavailable for three days
as long as he ends his week with you
so what?
you say, so what?
until you're blue

until you recognize the call for action
that unspoken verb
that you heard on your way here
that thirst for satisfaction
that has gotten tangled with the need
for someone somewhat decent just to be near
that dreadful silence you constantly hear
that suffocating compromise
which you would always say better stay clear

but not only does it catch your eye
and rides your hide
it steers
your life down a long winding rode
that you had hoped would somehow
turn into an aisle leading to a priest
where little children would throw flowers
and family at odds
would temporarily find peace
when they would smile upon you

dressed in your white gown
as you imagine that marrying for company
would grant you the happiness
you haven't yet found lying around
but each day you get all dressed up
feeling like a clown

sensing that he's only using you
that his lukewarm temperature
is him refusing you
that his one foot in
is him abusing you

and now he's driving you
down this long winding road
in the mist of disgrace
and you want to hide
your pretty face
knowing that loving someone
that ain't worth your love
simply because he's not easily replaced
is pathetic!
no
it's a freak show
a look into the mirror

becomes a reflection of how low you can go
lower than the bar you set
for yourself years ago
back when you were young
and every man that yearned
to touch your hand
had that look of glory
a hint that he'd offered you
a happy ever after ending story

and you figured you had time
time to be independent
time to be the best you
time to be sure
that what hand you took
would stick
but time
time
played an evil trick
and now you sit
riding down a long winding road
as he drives you
crazy
