Six Schools Of Hinduism Poem by Rm. Shanmugam Chettiar

Six Schools Of Hinduism

There are six orthodox schools of faith
In the so-called Hindu Philosophy,
Namely Nyaya, Sankhya, Vaisheshika,
Yoga, and Mimamsa of Purva and Uttara.

Nyaya school founded by sage Gautama
Believes that gaining knowledge through senses
Is the sole way of attaining liberation
From the cycle of birth and death.

Sankhya school founded by the sage Kapila
Recognizes Purusha (Soul) and prakriti (Nature)
And emphasizes the attainment of knowledge
Of Self is only through meditation.

Yoga school founded by Sage Patanjali
Puts forth that practising Asthanga Yoga
Is the way to relieve oneself from past sins
In order to make way for liberation.

Vaisheshika school founded by Sage Kanada
Stresses that the universe is reducible
To a finite atom, Brahman is the force
Causing consciousness in these atoms.

Purva Mimamsa founded by Sage Jaimini
Advocates that the power of mantra and
Yajnas sustain the world activities
And through Veda salvation is attained.

Uttara Mimamsa or Vedanta school
States the world is unreal and the real
Is Brahman, and commentd as Advaita,
Dvaita and Vishita Advaita by sages.
