Sejak Kota Berpindah Ke Kampung (Malay) Poem by Mahadevan Krishnan

Sejak Kota Berpindah Ke Kampung (Malay)

Pagi itu hening suasananya,
Bumi kampung masih basah disiram embun dingin,
Titisan jernih dedaun hijau gugur mencari bumi,
Tubuhku dimamah kesejukan nyaman di pagi hari,
Semuanya di kampungku yang diserikan seribu kehijauan.

Pagi itu hening suasananya,
Tabir pagi riuh disambut mergastua ceria,
Sambil Sang Suria mengendap di sebalik pepohon janggus,
Sempat juga ku lihat Sang Tupai menjamah rezeki,
Semuanya di kampungku yang direstui mergastua pelbagai.

Tapi…

Pagi ini kering suasananya,
Bumi kampung kini jarang disirami embun.
Dedaun segar hijau kini kuning layu menyambut tabir siang,
Sejuk tubuhku dimamah kesejukan kini semuanya hanya tinggal kenangan,
Semuanya di kampungku yang dikurniakan seribu pembangunan.

Pagi ini kering suasananya,
Tercari-cari ku akan irama mergastua di pagi hari,
Buas sungguh Sang Suria kerana kampung jarang didiami pohon hijau,
Tak sempat lagi ku melihat Sang Tupai menjamah janggus,
Semuanya sejak kota berpindah ke kampung.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Taking a stroll down memory lane in the village, a writer recalls the early hours of the morning with vivid flashes of the past. It was during those mornings when the earth was moist. Dew droplets hung loosely on leaf tips as the serene morning brought an invigorating chill. The morning veil had been welcomed by the cheer of birds, mammals and all other diurnals while the sun seeps-in unnoticed. The presence of these dwellers where one could easily catch a glimpse of, signify a lush and green environment that the village had been blessed with.

However, the writer laments with the present situation with dismay. The once green and lush village is only a memory of the past. As the dew is not to be seen, the crisp of the mornings are felt no more. The loss of trees and the rise of concrete is the perfect setting for scorching and sun-baked daybreaks. Claiming that the sun no more seeps-in unnoticed, the merciless rays now wipe out the remaining scarce vegetation. The absence of the birds, mammals and other dwellers is obvious, for catching a glimpse of them in a village gradually transforming to concrete is near to impossible. The yearn to feel the green, the invigorating chill, the rejuvenating morning, to see the birds and squirrels is felt as the writer laments on the encroachment on the suburbs.

The writer conveys a message on how the misinterpretation of development has taken its toll on the environment for many are wrongly led with the notion that the transformation towards concrete is the gist of human development. Rather than losing our pristine environments which are vital for the survivability of humans, it is essential that we do not lose our appreciation towards nature in our endeavour towards modernisation and development.

Finally, he further laments on the development of the rural.
