Reverberating Hymns Of Merdeka Poem by Mahadevan Krishnan

Reverberating Hymns Of Merdeka

Rating: 5.0

As I ponder what Merdeka is today;
I fail to immerse in one thing;
The one thing they had aspired.

I fail to partake within the real aspirations of Merdeka;
The aspirations our forefathers endeavoured;
The aspiration they paid beyond their lives and souls.

Today’s Merdeka seem an ephemeral gala;
Their Merdeka then was only a hope;
A hope sprouting amidst perished bodies.

Their hopes never diminished though;
For they epitomised the endeavour for Merdeka;
A hope that survived beyond their perished bodies.

Neither the colours nor the celebrations of today;
Match the arduous battles they braved;
The battle that they triumphed for our pleasure.

Let the hymns of Merdeka reverberate;
Commemorating their glory;
Forgetting not our quintessential forefathers.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The spirit of independence today seem to have taken a turn towards road gala and meaningless screams and meaningless extravaganza. As the nation matures, many seem to have failed to immerse to feel what our forefathers had faced in distress towards liberating the country. It was no extravaganza but endless sagas of blood, slaying and misery. They persevered to their last breaths. In contrast, we seem to be ignorant to their sufferings but on the contrary we dance and trumpet on the streets.

I like this one very much; Inspiring merdeka poem from Maha. I doubt the true meaning of 'merdeka' is well understood by the younger generation. I wish they could re-visit the 'merdeka' spirit as what that has been drawn by the three Tuns - Tunku, Tun V Sambanthan & Tun Tan Cheng Lock, :)
