On The Road I Walk Poem by John McClay

On The Road I Walk

I walk alone
On this one-way trail
Searching for what I seek
But to no avail

And what I seek
Is it real?
You cannot see, hear, smell, or taste it
What’s left to feel?

Some say it’s touch
From which you could show
The love for another
But I wouldn’t know

I could not tell you
What they claim to be
For there is nobody
Walking next to me

I see the changing leaves
But that’s all that is near
I hear the wind roar over head
But that’s all I can hear

There is no use
Trying to change
My destiny, it
Cannot be rearranged

I stumble and fall
My legs have caved
This tear-stained spot
Will be my grave

My vision turns black
I don’t even try
Maybe death will save me
And just let me die

I feel so warm
Why?
I thought it was cold
I thought I was to die

“You are not alone, ”
An angelic voice sung
“You can still change”
And to her words, I clung

I rose to my feet
And opened my eyes
But what I saw
Was a big surprise

She looked so beautiful
She smelled so sweet
Her smile alone
Almost knocked me off my feet

I didn’t know what to say
I didn’t know what to do
But to the trail we looked back
And bade adieu

We walk hand-in-hand
On a trail we choose
Together we win
Together we lose

And what I sought
I have now found
You cannot see, hear, smell, or taste it
But it is around

It was her I found
Sent from heaven above
And with a kiss from her lips
I knew it was love

She had healed my voice
But only one word I allowed
And with the softest of tones:
“Wow”
