On Death's Doorstep I Lie Poem by Max Jason Wallace

On Death's Doorstep I Lie

Rating: 5.0

Here at the foot of death’s doorstep I lie,
Under a majestically beautiful and star filled sky,
Countless memories are racing through my mind,
Back to the years of my youth, an innocent time,
With dreams of the future, and no thoughts I’d ever die.

Childhood games, playing in the summer sun,
Man, those were the days, and we had us some fun!
Laughter, and cheer and loved one’s smiling faces,
Picking wild berries in all our favorite secret places,

Climbing trees, horse’n round and playin’ tag,
Chasin’ fire flies and building castles in the sand.
Fishin’ with grandma, checkers with granddad,
I’d listen to each and every riveting story they had.

As my youth came to and end and I became a man,
Good fortune smiled on me me, a guy with no plan,
I met the girl of my dreams, the love of my life,
What a lucky man was I, to make her my wife.

Falling in love, the laughter and exciting times we shared,
To question my good fortune, I never really dared.
And then came the kids, God blessed us with a few,
They grew up good looking, smart, honorable and true.

With this little family of mine, I swelled up with pride
What a lucky man was I, to enjoy this fortunate ride,
Oh how little do they know the immense joy they did give,
To a cantankerous ol’man, with whom they happened to live.

Oh regrets, to be honest, like any man, I got a few,
But if it meant changing any good times, that I’d never do.
I tried to live my life right and play by the golden rule,
Life isn’t always fair, and at times can be hard, is oh so true.

Now, that my time here is over, 'for all good things must end'
There is just one thing on this earth, I can not leave unsaid.
When you find yourself, under a starry night, such as this,
Think of me, the love we shared and send me a tender kiss!
