Not Enough One Can Do Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Not Enough One Can Do

Seeking to await,
A shown appreciation...
From others done to do.
Is nothing more or less,
Than a pre-meditated assumption.
Made.
In expectation to receive gratitude.
That's all and that's it.
For something done to wish,
Approval and attention to get.

Although there are so many others,
Accustomed to perform this act...
Without it practiced.
Because of who they are.
And not time to spend,
Attempting to convince others...
A caring to display it,
Is as natural to them as breathing!
Or pretensions to believe them,
Should be accompanied by accolades.

Yet seldom do people like this,
Just leave what they do for others...
Without feeling offended.
If not repeatedly reminded,
Not a smile was shown exposing teeth.

"You know,
There is not enough one can do...
For 'some' people."

-Why would you say something like that? -

"All I got was just a 'Thank You',
From someone I delivered...
A chocolate bar and peppermints.
And...
Promising to return,
With a bottle of flavored water."

-No way?
And who were they?
Where do they live? -

"I didn't want to mention it.
But since you asked.
A neighbor.
Home recuperating.
From an automobile accident."

-Uh...
And uh,
What did you expect?
A parade with confetti thrown? -

"No.
You know I am not into myself like that.
However...
They could have at least,
Tried to show me,
A standing ovation attempted."

-You're kidding.
I know you are not serious.-

"And...
Answered their door.
Sitting in a wheelchair.
Dressed in a bathrobe! "

-Stop it.-

"I couldn't.
The door was wide open.
I couldn't stop it if I tried."
