Nostalgic.... Poem by Kavya .

Nostalgic....

Vishu, our new year is on the way
making me feel nostalgic,
remember the enthusiasm in all of us
who otherwise are v lethargic.

Still recall the joy of waking up before sunrise
to have a glimpse of the Vishukkani** with a price,
Yes, we all waited for the Vishukkaineetam**
which was given by elders as a custom.

Going to temples together at dawn
wearing new attire,
Then going for collection to relatives houses
we all used to conspire.

Counting the money we collected
used to be so much of fun,
We all return to our homes
once the collection is done.

Of course we waited for the Vishu Sadya**
a feast relished by all of us for lunch,
But for me this was a day of reunion and get together,
those wonderful days I will cherish forever! ! ! !

I WISH ALL MY READERS WHO CELEBRATE THIS FESTIVAL A VERY HAPPY VISHU.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Vishu (Malayalam: വിഷു) is an important Kerala festival celebrated in the month of 'Medam' and a Hindu festival in the Indian state of Kerala. The day of Vishu is often considered as the first day of the Zodiac Calendar, an auspicious day to mark the onset of any good deed.

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani, which literally means 'the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up'. The Vishukkani consists of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles intended to signify prosperity, including rice, fruits and vegetables, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, yellow flowers called konna (Cassia fistula) , holy texts and coins, usually in the prayer room of the house. This is arranged the night before Vishu and is the first sight seen on Vishu.

There is also a popular tradition of elders giving money to younger ones in the family on this day, or of hosts giving money to tenants or servants. This is called Vishukkaineetam.

Vishu feast or Sadya, which consist of equal proportions of salty, sweet, sour and bitter items.

(I miss those childhood days when we all cousins used to have a lot of fun on this day. This poem is dedicated to my dear cousions. As Vishu falls tomorrow, I recalled all those fun days we used to have.)
