My View Of Heaven

Rating: 4.6

My mother has been there
since nineteen fifty-nine.
With all of her dark hair,
I'll bet she's looking fine.

Dad's been gone since ninety-three;
he was the greatest yet.
His hair was silver as can be
but now is dark, I bet.

I can't wait to see Grandpa Jim
and Effie, his great wife.
I never did get to meet him
during his mortal life.

I was unborn when he passed on
and so we never met;
but I am sure the time will come
I'll get to see him yet.

But Effie was like a mother
to all of Daddy's kids.
After our mom had passed away,
there was so much she did.

Joseph Kimball, my grandpa
on my mother's side -
him I knew and I recall
him with a lot of pride.

He taught me songs, did Grandpa 'C',
'The Dying Hobo' was one.
How great it would seem to once more be
singing with him for fun.

I never got to meet his wife;
she's another I never knew.
But I feel sure, after this life
we'll meet; I know it's true.

Great-great grandpa Edson
has always intrigued me.
He was baptized when our church
was in its infancy.

Of the Nauvoo Legion he was part,
and the 'Battalion', too.
He was faithful from the start
and to the end was true.

There are so many others
I'd like to get to see,
and be with all my brothers
throughout eternity.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The man in the picture is my grandfather, the one I haven't met yet, my father's father. I don't know how old he was at the time the picture was taken, but he only lived to the age of 52.

This is another of the poems that has been submitted before. I deactivated it at one time, temporarily (I thought) , but when I went to reactivate it, the system wouldn't let me. I am finally getting around to posting it again.

This was actually one of the very first poems I posted on Poem Hunter. It was posted the first time on 15 September 2014. Now re-posted on 26 October 2016.

Your view of heaven is such a warm and loving one- -full to the brim of family known and family unknown. I am enthralled with what you've done here. I think I will try to memorialize my ancestors in a similar way [but for my own and my family's enjoyment since this is truly your idea. Thank you, too, for the introduction to these people- -perhaps I will get to meet them... but you'll pardon me, I am sure, for hoping I don't meet them soon.! ! ! ! 10 x 10! ! ! ! ...

You have paid homage to all your dear ones- deceased! So much of love has flowed into us through generations and it is because of their sweat and toil and their farsight and loving concern that we are what we now are! A To have a grateful heart for all that they did is a great thing! Yes, we shall meet all of them on the other shore of life. A poem that has come from your heart!

What an incredible write! Such a heart-felt tribute to deceased family and friends. You almost had me in tears. Both of pain and joy. The people you mentioned are the kind that I would like to meet. I too had a grandfather that I hadn't met. Ironically, I felt his presence during my near-death experience. Thank you for sharing your special gift.

Hello Kim. Love this fine sentimental poem. What an heirloom. Also, I love your rich biography. I’ve lost a lot of poems too because of PC malfunctions. Keep the inspiration flowing. PS: As for my poem “A Sad Comedian.” I’m just learning that it was featured as Poem of the Day, and would like to thank you for your kind comments.

A good poem. I liked it. I share your thoughts. However, it feels like a stanza is missing between 4 and 5. You say she, but it isn't clear who you are talking about.

I have now re-written the stanza, so there is no longer any doubt. Thanks for pointing that out. The rhyme is not as good as it was, but the meaning is clear.

And well worth the re-post. It makes us think of our Ancestors and the roles they played in our lives. It sounds like your Mother died youngish as mine did. She was a great practical joker and always full of fun. Did a lot of Genealogy mainly on my wife's Scottish family. A really fascinating poem worth putting on my favourites.
