It Was Morning When I Met You Poem by Kevin Cox

It Was Morning When I Met You

It was morning
when I met you.
The stars had just
left the sky.

A mutual friend
introduced us.
The gems of dew
sparkled brightly
In the low morning sun.

I was tongue-tied;
Not at all my
usual self.
Various birds were
in the bleachers
each rooting busily
for romance
or for shame.

Our dear friend
left us and we
began to walk
a wooded path.

An impudent squirrel
thrashed us soundly
For trespassing
his domain

We chatted warmly
once the butterflies
were over.
It was then, 'neath
large leaf-laden branches
that something happened,
a subtle change within
each of our beings.

Just as a new-hatched
robin peers with wonder
at the world.
Our friendship blossomed
and, put down deep
roots, and grew to
become
the gift it is
today.
