If? Poem by Mark Heathcote

If?

If, you wrote an "if" book
It would never be finished,
It would never reach its final chapter its end.
If, you wrote an "if" book
Its happy ending would never be envisaged.
And the text to the moon & stars would extend
If, you wrote an "if" book
It would never be shortlisted or reprinted
It wouldn't win any prizes my lover, my distant friend.
