Head Versus Heart Poem by Khairul Ahsan

Head Versus Heart

Rating: 5.0

My head is strong but the heart is weak.
The head is a dictator but the heart?
Soft, submissive and a follower meek.

My heart is easily moved by the slightest passion,
It wants to side with the lovelorn, the forlorn, but
The head comes into play and controls the motion.

The dictates of the head are hard to ignore,
When the soft, errant heart cries in silence,
The head comes in and shows it the door.

An interesting take on the traditional rivals, but it's a debatable issue for the rational and emotional causes, and humans are not all the followers of Plato who has zero tolerance for emotions of which the heart is the seat...because sometimes heart dictates too... the wonderful thing about this write up is that you ended it successfully otherwise it is a complex topic you touched!

Beautiful stuff, the duality of our natures is best expressed between our passions and our reasons, one burns with verdant furor the other cools tempers, sometimes our head gets in the way and causes prevarications that lead to procrastinations, but other times it stops us from making foolish mistakes, but maybe sometimes foolish mistakes are important, either way you express it with punctuality and clarity as well as beauty. A great poem.

Quiet interesting poem. Yes, head is like a dictator, but it brings bitter truth and heart is gentle and flows where ever it finds its way....Beautiful presentation. Enjoyed reading it. Thank you for many inspiring comments for my poems.

this goes to MyPoemList. i saw a comment from you, Khairul, from last year at my poem 'being old......'. someone else finally commented on it (my poem) and i had to reread it to refresh my aging memory. i really enjoyed and appreciated your comment. so, that is how i happened to search out you and one of your poems today. i'm glad i did, as i find this gem of yours very well-written and thought-provoking. my brain probably overrules my heart plenty of times. we MUST keep our hearts under control! ! ! i had to look up errant and try to decide what kind of heart you were referring to. my favorite stanza: My head is strong but the heart is weak. The head is a dictator but the heart? Soft, submissive and a follower meek. i only read one comment, below, by marie shine. it is well-crafted as well, though i'm not sure i totally agree. i sometimes wish my brain was strong enough to be meek. in particular i wish i could be disagreeable in a calm way more often, rather than in a harsh, loud way. my wife wishes the same. oh well. i can't be PERFECT! thanks for the rhymes and for sharing your thoughts. bri :)

@Akhtar Jawad Thanks for the lovely comment. I appreciate. The quotation from Allama Iqbal has enhanced the meaning of my poem. Thanks.

In Urdu Allama Iqbal says Lazim hay dil ke sath rahe pasban-e-Aql....Lekin kabhi kabhi use tanha bhi chor dey (It is neceesary that guidence of head should remain advising the heart, but (the need of human being) sometimes head should leave the heart to act according to his own sweet will. A lovely and nice poem.
