God And Eddie Poem by Richard Anders

God And Eddie

When I was still a young man
I heard God call my name
'Eddie Stark, my fine young man
I`m going to give you fame'

'Now hold you hard' I said to Him
'We`ll have to make a deal
for I am still a young man
and not yet learned to kneel'

'Oh! hold your tongue young Eddie
and hear me out this day
I need a friend to help me out
here`s what I have to say.'

'I want to send a message
to all the folk on Earth
so pin your lugholes back my man
and list for all you`re worth'

'Well ok man' I said to Him
'But I`m really not the type
you need some guy like Paul Revere
to give your gas a hype! '

'Give my gas a hype'! says He
'My word the lingo`s queer
so here`s my play young Eddie
lend me your shell pink ear! '

'The World that I made long ago
was bright and full of joy
with plenty grub for man and mouse
and work for every boy'!

'I gave them night I gave them day
I gave them land and sea
six days is all you need to work
the seventh keep for Me'

'But that was years ago' I said
'and things have changed I guess,
if short of work we find ourselves
we`ve got the DSS! '

'Oh come now Eddie boy' says He
'You really have a cheek,
I made men strong and able
to help the mild and meek'

'The world I made so long ago
is sinking fast I fear
rich men are getting richer
and richer by the year! '

'There`s hungry men and women
who need my help right now
and luckless people by the score
who feel I`ve let then down'

'I can`t do much here on my own
so Eddie help me out
a big shot`s not a big shot
if he hasn`t got some clout

'Right o! ' I said 'i`ll lend a hand
just tell me what to do
but don`t expect no miracles
I`ll leave that up to you! '

'Well done Ed' the Big Man said
'That`s what I want to hear,
go out and tell the people
the day of reck`ning near'

'Of course they won`t believe you
sometimes they`ll do you down
but persevere my fine young friend
and Ill give you a Crown! '

'If some folk get the message
and spread it far and wide
they`ll get to know that I still care
and I`m still on their side'!

'So do your best young Eddie
and look them in the eye
tell them I still love them
and my love will never die'

'i`ll say goodbye now Eddie
I`ve lots of work to do
remember what I! ve told you
and I`ll remember you'
