So off we went.
Diving into uncharted depths,
trampled by the cascading horses
shattering against your skin.
Droplets of water pirouetted down your cheek,
a severed head bobbing above the surface.
We swam out.
Absorbed in the surging turmoil of the waves,
charging with a renewed ferocity at the shore,
in a crescendo of simmering spray.
Salt stung your eyes.
A spectral image of your disjointed body refracted through the water,
disfigured by the sand that plagued your skin.
Gulls screamed, gathering above us.
A seething cloud segregating our sun,
dancing, diving in a risqué ballet,
self-immolation always near.
A flaying hand scythed through the water,
fingers scraped,
pebbles dashed on the windbreak,
separated from the sanctuary of the shore,
powerless, weighted in a watery limbo.
