Deep Pools Of Guilt Poem by Marie Helene Diop

Deep Pools Of Guilt

Gloomy grey blankets
cover vacant land.
Deathlike silence devours vulnerable world.

“Screech! ”
Terrifying, horrible car tires disturbs awkward
unwelcome stillness.
Solitary man steps out of car, invisibly marked with word: killer!
Motionless, petrified, horrified, he
gazes at lifeless, cold, paralyzed, little girl.

His arms and feet won’t move,
as if they’re paralyzed.
Girl seems so fragile, like an expensive antique.
Blood trickles down her cheek, like tears
showing sorrow, hurt, understanding.

Man drowns in deep pools of guilt.
Fear crawls into mind
calling horrible names, making him go ballistic, nutty, zany.
Should one sacrifice life, career, and goals?
Or know God is looking down, shining light on right decisions?
Should one show tad sorrow
to helpless victim of foolish, ludicrous behavior, actions, decisions?

Petrified, shivering hand reaches for small girl,
knowing right from wrong.
Hope and desire come about his mind
frantically, desperately yearning for innocent girl
not to be dead, as if she were his own.

Loud noises begin to annoy man.
Vivid blue and red flashing lights blind.
Armies of men with silver badges surround man,
suffocate him, encircle him.

Man shall be taken to doom and misery,
where he shall visualize atrocious, horrendous darkness,
soundlessly apologizing to such innocent girl,
who is dead without motive.
