Brother Wept Poem by Mehta Hasmukh Amathaal

Brother Wept

The elder brother wept
As promise was not kept
For his marriage
He was in full rage

We were not preferred
As marriage proposal was never offered
We were not considered fit family
As there was financial crunch already

He was getting desperate
And we were not able to supplement
We had tiny shop running well
He had intention for outside place to settle

We could manage with some offer of money
The girl was chosen to marry
We could hardly manage
But tried to engage

We were burdened with debt
As he had already decided and left
The father was aged person
And I was little boy not fully frown

The money lenders and traders increased grip
The father was unable to keep word
He was insulted often when enough people were around
I felt so much humiliated and really cursed
