Blackbird Poem by Jay Alexander

Blackbird

I was wandering on my way,
Deep in thoughts about the
Coming day, when to my side I heard
A tweet so shrill, then
Once again, insistent,
I could not but hesitate and listen,
And there he was ensconced
Inside a bush,
Dark as night, in full flush
Of youth, his coat a velvet cloak
Of shiny coal, head cocked
To one side, with staring
Beady eyes,
As if to say: sleepy-head,
Wake up am I not beautiful,
Thats why I called;
Then suddenly as if a door
Had opened, I realised,
I recognised a friend.
I wanted to talk, move
Closer but, Mr. Blackbird,
With a few flits,
Climbed to a nearby tree,
Lifted his tail and pooed.
He then flew sunwards,
So I lost him,
The only sign a disappearing,
Tweet far away.
Still, I knew, that in the end
He and I were mates,
And I would tell it, and in his way
Would tell it too.
