An Embroidered Quilt And The Woven Dreams Poem by Khairul Ahsan

An Embroidered Quilt And The Woven Dreams

Rating: 4.3

On the foot side of his bed
Was neatly kept folded
An embroidered quilt.
As the poet gently lay down
He pulled it up and spread
Over his body, toe to head.

As he closed his eyes,
Layers of thoughts thronged his head.
He wove them in an invisible cord,
To be garlanded into a poem, afterward.
The cozy quilt soon brought to his eyes
Dreams of his fiancee, flying in the skies.

The maiden who embroidered the soft quilt
Had also spun some subtle dreams
When she hand stitched those lines.
Her thoughts of love broke all confines.
Her impeccable needlework neatly reflected
Her lover's memory as each stitch connected.

She poured her passion into her work.
Every piercing of the hand held needle
Was meant to portray an work of art.
She fancied her fiancee to sleep under it,
But alas, she couldn't give him this as a gift
As she had to sell it to make both ends meet.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Poor women in Bangladesh make beautiful embroidered quilts. They sell these to the well to do persons and exporters for a living. Their impeccable works reflect their deep imagination and softness of mind. This is a time consuming work. When they stitch those, I fancy they ride on imaginations as poets do. As a poet myself, this is my tribute to them.

A heart touching write with emotions and involvement.Loved the way you described with sentiment. The quilt she embroidered With dreams she nurtured weaving a safe path Protecting her nest..... She was dreaming a smile In her baby's face, Lighting a lamp in her hut. Needle was moving faster in the linen To make her safe as fast.
