Alzheimer's Why? Poem by Philip Mc Mahon

Alzheimer's Why?

Rating: 5.0

She wakes in the morning not sure of the day
Not knowing where she's been, not knowing what to say.
Her world has become a scary place
She looks in the mirror, who owns that face?
She cannot remember who she's meant to be
Where she came from or what she means to me.
We are all just people she ought to know
Because we keep telling her so.
She's now just standing in quicksand sinking without a trace
Trying to hang on, trying to recognise a face.
My dad is dead, yet she does not even know
We cannot tell her because it would hurt her so.
Would she remember, no she cannot comprehend
That one part of what made this family, has come to an end.
She is all we have now, but I cannot understand
What part my Dad dying fits into Gods master play.
We all have to mind you now; Dad has left you for us to love
To keep you safe, to hold your hand until God calls you above

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My mam was in a nursing home when my dad died, but we were told by the Alzheimer's society not to tell her because she still asked about him and we did not want her last memory of him to be that he was dead, rather than remembering him alive and happy.

Superb write so beautifully written, a heartbreaking write but the hope and love of her family is a light so bright shining with compassion, tenderness and great love!

That is so sad, it brought a tear to my eye, the sentiment is brillant. I think its sadder when we lose someone who is still with us. that was a great write.. this is a 10. Annette
