After Passing The Examination Poem by Bai Juyi

After Passing The Examination

Rating: 3.3

For ten years I never left my books;
I went up ... and won unmerited praise.
My high place I do not much prize;
The joy of my parents will first make me proud.
Fellow students, six or seven men,
See me off as I leave the City gate.
My covered couch is ready to drive away;
Flutes and strings blend their parting tune.
Hopes achieved dull the pains of parting;
Fumes of wine shorten the long road ...
Shod with wings is the horse of him who rides
On a Spring day the road that leads to home.

Nice poem rich in rhyme, rhythm as also meaning displaying a sense of pride in the meritorious students, since long past.

I am not sure I fully understand why you or the voice of the poem, the which is not always the poet, won unmerited praise. This person was not lazy. At the very least, he or she did not left his or her books for ten years and this should count for something. Perhaps something I fail to see in this poem.

He knows he must succeed, he knows his parents will be proud of him After this he must leave the parental home to study/work a concise report/poem that he passed his exam and then the farewell is not so difficult.
