A Questioning Mind

The mind of another human being,
Looked at me from behind dark brown eyes,
And asked me 'What are you seeing?
And please, do not answer me with lies'.
I said ' I see a starving child,
And I don't know why I still do,
But worst of all this is reality,
For many millions, not just a few.'

I am the only being whose doom
No tongue would ask no eye would mourn
I never caused a thought of gloom
A smile of joy since I was born

In secret pleasure - secret tears
